About Us

My name is Sharon and I began the journey of Fruity Roots Ltd in November 2020. With the help of my Wife Amy, and our Employee Emma we began this adventure, and gamble together. I have lived in Plymouth since starting University in 2007, completing my course in 2010. During my time studying, I also worked for a company called Stokes, with whom I had worked with since turning 16 back in Cornwall.

Stokes is where it all began, as a well known Greengrocers across the southwest, working for this company from a young age I became interested in sourcing fresh, local and sustainable, fruits and vegetables that actually have flavour and lasts for more than a day.

What happened in between?

After finishing University, I became a postwoman and moved to Plympton in 2013 and this started my journey of working within the community. I was a Postie for 6 years, and during which I also became a Retained Firefighter at our local station. This had always been my dream, and I also managed to become a Wholetime firefighter for the last 2 years of my almost 7 year career with DSFRS.

What was missing from our town?

After leaving DSFRS in 2019 and taking some personal time out for reasons I will not bore you with, I felt that my home town was missing a local greengrocers to go along with our wonderful local Butchers and other independant shops. The Ridgeway is a lovely little High Street and it is still bustling today. And this is where it all began. Almost 4 years on we have expanded our ranges, seen our youngest customers grow and we are constantly grateful for each and everyone of you who gives a try and return week on week.

Sustainability

We try our hardest to be sustainable in everything we do at Fruity Roots. Sourcing local produce from our Wholesalers when the Seasons allow, we try our best to stay away from unnecessary plastic and travel miles.

Our main aim is to reduce waste, and because most of our items are available to buy singularly, I believe this enables our customers to shop for what they need, when they need it.

If something isn't perfect, we also have a 'Reduced to Clear' barrel which many of our customers use and head straight for when they walk into our shop - we hate waste!

Local Businesses supporting each other

When stocking the shop and adding new lines, I always try to stock from other local businesses. We are lucky enough to receive wonderful freshly baked Sourdough goods from the wonderful Heyl Bakery in Alma yard, Local honey from Black Dog Honey Bees, Fresh Coffee from Taboo Coffee, Chutneys and Marmalades from The Carved Angel, and much more! Please see the 'Our Supplier's' Page for more information.
